A 27-year-old man in New Hampshire may spend the rest of his life behind bars for executing an elderly couple last year on a hiking trail, fatally shooting the 67-year-old man and his 66-year-old wife while they were out for a walk. A jury in Merrimack County found Logan L. Clegg — known to local authorities as “Mountain Dew Man” for the number of empty cans littering his campsite — guilty on all charges, including four counts of second-degree murder in the April 2022 slayings of Stephen Reid and Djeswende “Wendy” Reid, video broadcasted by Law&Crime shows.
Clegg was also found guilty on four counts of falsifying evidence and one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm following the nearly three-week trial, prosecutors said.
“We’re obviously very happy,” Assistant New Hampshire Attorney General Josh Speicher said in a statement following the verdict. “We think the jury got it right. They were very thoughtful and attentive throughout a very long and arduous trial with a lot of difficult concepts. So, again, we’re happy for the families most of all, that there’s some closure here and some accountability.”
Brian Reid, the son of Stephen and Wendy Reid, also spoke to reporters after the proceedings came to a close.
“A liar, a thief, a murderer has been brought to justice today,” Brian Reid said. “The legacy of my parents’ humanitarian work, their kindness and their love for life will endure. Let today be a reminder of the value of human life and the strength of community. For myself, our families and everyone who carried and shared our pain, may the justice that has been served aid in the work of our healing.”
According to prosecutors, the retired couple at approximately 2:22 p.m. on April 18, 2022, left their home at the Alton Woods apartment complex to go for a walk.
Their bodies were recovered three days later in a wooded area near the Marsh Loop Trail. They had both suffered multiple gunshot wounds.
Authorities investigated the murders for nearly six months before they were able to connect Clegg to the crime and locate him in Burlington, Vermont.
Authorities said that Clegg was unhoused and temporarily living in a tent near where the Reids lived. Investigators used surveillance footage from a shopping center located next to the woods and receipts from local stores to place Clegg in the area of the murders at the time the Reids were killed, according to a report from New Hampshire Public Radio.
A witness who passed the Reids on the trail just before hearing gunshots also said she saw Clegg standing on the trail “for a while” and looking in the direction where their bodies were later discovered.
According to a probable cause affidavit obtained by The Republican newspaper, when investigators first came across Clegg at his campsite while searching for the Reids, he identified himself as “Arthur Kelly” and was holding several cans of Mountain Dew Code Red. But when the bodies of the couple were found the following day, police returned to his campsite and saw that he’d packed up and left. When authorities could not find any records for someone named Arthur Kelly, they dubbed the then-unknown Clegg as “Mountain Dew Man,” per the report.
Clegg is currently scheduled to appear in Merrimack County Superior Court on Dec. 15 for his sentencing hearing.
