Man accused of killing 4-year-old son dies by suicide in custody

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (TCN) — A man accused of killing his 4-year-old son and injuring his wife and 1-year-old son has died while in police custody.

On Feb. 17, Luis Sanchez, 41, allegedly accused his wife, Paige Mowrer, of cheating. The two argued and Sanchez allegedly pulled out a gun. Mowrer dialed 911 and Sanchez allegedly shot her and the two children while she was on the call.

When police arrived, he allegedly refused to surrender peacefully and was tased before being arrested. Mowrer later told police Sanchez said he had spoken to God, and that he was an evil person.

The 4-year-old child was pronounced dead at the scene. Mowrer and the 1-year-old were treated at a hospital.

On the evening of April 5, Sanchez was found in medical distress while in custody at the Metropolitan Detention Center, KRQE reports. Hospital staff declared him dead by suicide shortly after. His death remains under investigation.

KOB reports Mowrer is a prosecutor for the 2nd Judicial District Attorney’s Office and that the New Mexico Department of Justice had taken over the investigation.

Sanchez’s lawyer, Paul Fourt, said of his death, “This was a tragedy from the get-go. It started out in my office as a tragedy, and it ended in my office is a tragedy. … I received no indication from my client, either through verbally or mannerisms or anything that this might be the outcome.”

According to KOB, Mowrer had filed for divorce a couple of weeks ago.
