HUBBARD COUNTY, Minn. (TCN) — Authorities recently arrested a man on suspicion of stabbing a victim who he believed had an affair with his wife.
In the early hours of Oct. 4, the Hubbard County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a man and his 5-year-old daughter “screaming for help outside in a trailer park.” One of the residents of the trailer park reportedly saw a man who had been stabbed and was bleeding from the chest.
Deputies and medical personnel responded to the scene and located the victim, 49-year-old David Kerr, and determined he had been stabbed around eight to 10 times. Kerr was transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Park Rapids and then airlifted to a Fargo hospital. Authorities did not disclose his condition as of Oct. 6.
Deputies identified the suspect as 44-year-old Charles Justus and went to his home. He and his wife, Danielle Westphal, were taken into custody. According to the sheriff’s office, Justus said in an interview that he allegedly stabbed Kerr multiple times. He reportedly told investigators that he used to live next to the victim and believed he and his wife had an affair. Allegedly, Justus went to Kerr’s home, where he saw him and his daughter on the couch. Deputies allege he “began attacking Kerr with his fists and knife.”
Justus reportedly went home following the attack and told his wife about the incident. Justus and Westphal allegedly disposed of the suspect’s blood-stained clothing. Wetphal reportedly admitted she saw blood on her husband’s arm, and he told her he stabbed Kerr. She allegedly confessed that she helped her husband dispose of the clothes.
Justus and Wetphal were booked into the Hubbard County Jail. According to KSTP-TV, Justus faces charges of attempted first- and second-degree murder, first-degree assault, and burglary, and Westphal faces charges of aiding an offender.
