BRIGHTON, Colo. (TCN) — A 50-year-old man faces multiple charges after a 32-year-old pregnant woman was found deceased inside an abandoned vehicle.
The Brighton Police Department discovered the body of Keeley Koff with an apparent gunshot wound on the morning of Aug. 29. Upon further investigation, officials identified James “Jaime” Benavidez as the primary suspect.
According to police, Koff “may have been associated” with Benavidez. He faces charges of first-degree motor vehicle theft, first-degree murder, unlawful termination of pregnancy, possession of a weapon by a previous offender, and habitual domestic violence offender.
Benavidez was arrested the day before Koff’s body was found on unrelated charges involving an attempted robbery, pursuit, and attempted homicide of officers. In that case, Benavidez allegedly tried to rob a man’s vehicle at a gas station, and a gunshot was fired during a struggle, KCNC-TV reports. The owner of the car suffered minor injuries, and Benavidez fled on a bike.
Allegedly, Benavidez then stole a vehicle from a business, and a pursuit ensued. He is accused of then firing shots toward pursuing police cars, hitting some of them, but no officer was harmed. Police reportedly fired back, and Benavidez stopped before he was taken into custody.
