JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (TCD) — Jurors found a man guilty this week of fatally stabbing his ex-girlfriend’s new boyfriend in 2021 after looking up how to kill someone with a knife.
Florida State Attorney Melissa Nelson announced Dec. 12 that the state is seeking the death penalty after a jury convicted Randall Brown of first-degree murder and armed burglary with assault or battery
According to the state attorney’s office, on Aug. 3, 2021, between 1 a.m. and 3 a.m., the victim and his girlfriend, Kissy Mackey, noticed the smell of gasoline and smoke and saw that the victim’s front door was ablaze. Brown then reportedly “attacked the victim and stabbed him more than 80 times.”
During the assault, the state attorney’s office said Brown and the victim moved from the front door to the kitchen even though the victim was “defenseless.” Mackey eventually called 911 at approximately 3 a.m.
Jacksonville Fire and Rescue responded to the home and performed lifesaving measures on the victim, but he succumbed to his wounds.
With the help of K-9s, officials found the suspect’s shirt, a backpack, knife, and gas container near the home. They also found a GPS tracking device registered to Brown and blood in his vehicle.
Further investigation revealed Mackey used to date Brown, but she broke up with him a few weeks before the attack. According to the state attorney’s office, Mackey’s son died around the time of the breakup, and Mackey told Brown she was “about to be rich.”
Brown reportedly tried to get back together with Mackey but knew she was with another man. He reportedly placed a tracking device on his ex-girlfriend’s car to “find out where was sleeping at night.”
The state attorney’s office said investigators found out Brown had Googled “how to kill someone with a knife,” and he made “other incriminating searches” before and after the fatal stabbing.
According to the state attorney’s office, Mackey changed her relationship status on Facebook just hours after the victim’s death to show she was in a relationship with Brown.
Mackey was charged with accessory after the fact.
