The Colorado man who stabbed his mother 54 times — some injuries apparently occurring after death — must spend a total of 51 years in prison for killing her and then stealing his father’s Chevy Impala when fleeing, the Weld County District Attorney’s Office announced on Tuesday.
The defendant, Gabriel Faudoa, 37, argued with his mother, June “Jean” Martinez Faudoa, 66, on May 10, 2021, and killed her the next morning in unincorporated Weld County near the city of Eaton, investigators said in a 2023 report from The Greeley Tribune.
Deputies at the time of the murder said they responded at 7:40 a.m. on May 11 to the 400 block of Wall Street regarding a dead person who was killed at the home.
They found June Faudoa lying face up with cuts and knife wounds to her torso and neck, the latter of which had been cut to the bone, according to the Tribune. She had stab wounds to her hands and arms. A deputy said some wounds did not seem to bleed, possibly indicating that these occurred after death.
Deputies said they found Gabriel Faudoa within an hour of their response. Prosecutors said that he had been walking toward the crime scene.
According to the DA’s office, he claimed at trial that he had been experiencing methamphetamine-induced psychosis during the incident.
Jurors convicted him of murder in the second degree and aggravated motor vehicle theft
“This is not merely a case about drug abuse or making an isolated ‘poor decision.’ This is a case of evil, pure and simple,” Deputy District Attorney Travis Winter said.
Defendant Faudoa must spend 48 years in prison for the murder conviction and three years for the theft.
