A Wisconsin man is accused of attempting to kill his wife just as law enforcement officers approached them — with divorce proceedings hovering in the background of the couple’s affairs.
Guy Paider, 53, stands charged with attempted first-degree intentional homicide and first-degree recklessly endangering safety, Ozaukee County jail records show. The startling scene unfolded on Friday.

Paider’s wife had met with a lawyer that day to discuss her ongoing divorce proceedings with her husband, she told investigators, per a criminal complaint obtained by Milwaukee-based ABC affiliate WISN. When she returned home, he repeatedly asked her what she wanted in the divorce, but she told him she didn’t want to discuss the matter in front of their child.
The child was sent to their room, and the couple was alone, investigators said. That’s when Paider allegedly attacked his wife.
“Call 911,” she reportedly screamed before she was thrown onto their bedroom carpet, she told police. She said her husband opened a drawer — “where his underwear is” — and grabbed a gun.
“Look at me, look at me, so you can see me when I shoot you,” Paider told her, according to the complaint.
Deputies with the Ozaukee County Sheriff’s Office were called at about 3:50 p.m. about the incident. They said Grafton Police Department officers arrived first, announcing their presence as they entered the home.
“A woman was heard calling for help,” according to the sheriff’s office. As officers approached the area from where her screams came, “a male subject fired multiple shots, striking the woman.” The man — later identified as Paider — was arrested and placed in the Ozaukee County Jail, authorities said.
The victim, a 48-year-old woman, “sustained serious injuries” and was ultimately airlifted to a hospital in Milwaukee. No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident.
She was later listed as in stable condition.
Paider was a former West Allis firefighter, according to WISN. West Allis is just west of Milwaukee.
