“I just got out of prison for this,” a gymgoer allegedly told cops during his arrest for stabbing a man in the butt after an encounter at a leg press machine.
John David Makinson, 69, was locked up at the Travis County Correctional Complex in Texas on a $50,000 bond for a count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, records show.
The victim was at an LA Fitness in the neighborhood of North Austin shortly after 11 a.m. on Friday, according to court documents obtained by Austin Fox affiliate KTBC. He wanted to use a leg press machine, but the suspect was already on it and told him to do something else, authorities wrote.
A gym member, Andrew Puno, told the outlet there are signs there giving a time limit of 10 to 20 minutes per equipment use.
The victim waited, and then he used the machine after Makinson was done. He finished his workout and went to the locker room, but the suspect allegedly began yelling at him. The victim felt blood coming down his leg, authorities said, and that’s when he realized that Makinson, armed with a knife, had stabbed him in the butt, officers wrote. The suspect allegedly chased him through the bathroom.
At a staffer’s urging, the victim went to the front of the gym, where others shielded him from Makinson.
“Who else wants some?” the suspect allegedly him.
Another person managed to calm him down, police said.
Officers arrived and arrested the suspect.
“I just got out of prison for this,” he allegedly said.
Makinson, who is charged with assault, was reportedly convicted of the same charge 11 years before.
