Neville, alongside punditry colleague Jamie Carragher, said United’s showing was one all defenders should respect. He added: “I have to say that I think that was a performance that you’d [Carragher] probably respect, in the same way as I would, thinking from a defensive point of view of how Newcastle at times were having 80 per cent of the ball in the previous 10-15 minutes but never looked like they were going to score.
“For me, they were just really impressive. They were really shrewd and streetwise.”
United will aim to take a step towards their next piece of silverware this evening. They host West Ham in the fifth round of the FA Cup.
