Riverside, California, police are investigating after a two people were found dead within a block of one another near the county courthouse.
Police said they responded to a call about “a subject down” just after 2 a.m. and then found a second person nearby, both suffering from “unknown injuries.”
They were pronounced dead at the scene.
According to KTLA, police initially said they believed the victims — a man and a woman — were stabbed but later said they cold not confirm how they died.
People who work in the area told the station they believe at least one of the victims was homeless.
“Everybody loves him,” one person said. “He’s been out there for years. We give him blankets and food. He’s just always a happy guy.”
While police said it was unclear if the man and woman knew one another, the neighborhood workers said the pair “often kept to themselves.”
It’s unknown if police have identified a suspect.
