Manchester United fear that Harry Maguire’s substantial wages could make it difficult to sell him this summer, according to a report.

Manchester United are reportedly fearful that Harry Maguire‘s substantial wage packet could make it difficult to sell him during this summer’s transfer window.

The 30-year-old has dropped down the pecking order at Old Trafford this season in terms of the centre-back positions in the side, with Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez both ahead of him, while Victor Lindelof and Luke Shaw have also been picked instead of the club captain this term.

Maguire is widely expected to leave the Red Devils this summer, with the likes of West Ham United, Aston Villa and Newcastle United believed to be keen to keep him in the Premier League.

Meanwhile, a recent report claimed that Paris Saint-Germain had identified the England international as a sumer transfer target.

However, according to Football Insider, Man United have fears over a summer exit due to the defender’s huge salary, which is thought to be in excess of £200,000 a week.

The report claims that Red Devils head coach Erik ten Hag has already made it clear to the club’s board that he wants Maguire to be sold during the summer market.

The former Sheffield United youngster has more than two years left to run on his current agreement at Old Treafford, while there is an option to extend the deal until June 2026.

Maguire has started just five Premier League matches during the 2022-23 campaign, while he has been named in a Europa League first XI on just one occasion this term.

The Englishman has featured on 21 occasions in all competitions at club level this season, but only 10 of those have been in the Premier League, with Ten Hag preferring other options at the back.

Maguire made the move to Old Trafford from Leicester City in 2019, and he has featured on 165 occasions for the club in all competitions, scoring seven goals and contributing five assists in the process.

“I am a player, 29 years old, I haven’t been in this position in my career,” he told ITV Sport earlier this year. “It is a position I do not want to get used to. But it is part and parcel in football and I have been working hard every day. I am pushing, I am training well. And when my chance comes, I need to take it.

“We know at this club we need competition for places, we have some top centre-backs at this club. So, I think we are all going to be needed from now until the end of the season.

“I feel like I have looked after myself. I think it has been two-and-a-half weeks since my last start. I have been working hard in training.

“The lads who have been playing have done really well. So when I get the opportunity, I need to take it and make sure we win. It was nice to be out there and helping the lads and I am ready when my chance comes.”

Man United will be bidding to return to winning ways in the Premier League when they welcome Southampton to Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.
