The 21-year-old was suspended by the Premier League side way back in January 2022 when he was arrested on suspicion of rape, assault, controlling and coercive behaviour.

Those charges were all dropped earlier this year, with Greater Manchester Police announcing in February that Greenwood “no longer faces criminal proceedings”.

But when it comes to his future at United, the situation remains murky. The England international last played for the club at the start of 2022 against West Ham United, in a game that saw Marcus Rashford net an injury-time winner.

There has been plenty of speculation that Greenwood, who is still subject to an internal investigation by Man United, could be either sent out on-loan or sold this summer.

And it appears as though Dutch boss Erik ten Hag is keen to keep the striker at Old Trafford. The Manchester Evening News report Ten Hag is against selling Greenwood, which would make a loan away from the club ahead of next season more likely. Links to clubs in Spain, Italy and Turkey continue to persist, while the forward himself was recently pictured training privately in a bid to keep his fitness levels up.

However, while his potential and ability are unquestionable, a decision to bring Greenwood back into the fold as soon as next season would almost certainly bring about widespread backlash from football fans across the country.

While it has been claimed that his teammates would welcome him back into the fold at Carrington, the founder of Man United’s Women’s Supporters’ Club never wants to see Greenwood wear their shirt again.

“United need to make a statement and letting him back would be the worst thing they could do,” said Natalia Burrell earlier this year.

“It would set back our club in terms of what we’re trying to do with our women’s team and campaigns like Her Game Too, which aim to encourage women to play and watch football. I don’t want to see him training, in a kit, or coming out at Old Trafford again. And I’m confident they won’t (let him).”
