HOLLAND, Mich. (TCN) — Authorities recently arrested and charged a mother on suspicion of killing her son because he allegedly wanted to die.
According to a news release from the City of Holland Public Safety, in the early morning of Friday, Feb. 21, Holland Police responded to an apartment to a report of a domestic incident, where they found 39-year-old Katie Lee holding a knife.
Per MLive.com, Lee “told dispatch that she couldn’t get her son to stop breathing,” adding, “her son asked her to help him stop breathing and had been trying to for a while” because “he did not want to turn 18.”
Police searched the home and reportedly found Lee’s 17-year-old son, Austin Pikaart, deceased with a “substantial amount of blood around his head area.” According to MLive.com, officers observed a laceration to Pikaart’s throat and two to his arm. A forensic pathologist later determined he died of a cut to his neck.
Lee, who had blood on her clothing and a knife, allegedly threatened two officers. Police eventually Tased Lee and took her into custody after giving multiple verbal commands.
Lee purportedly told officers they were “supposed to kill her so that she could be with her son.”
Investigators learned the suspect and her son allegedly tried to overdose on medication the previous day. According to MLive.com, Lee said she cut her son with a knife after he passed out.
Detectives worked with the Ottawa County Prosecutor’s Office and obtained a warrant for Lee’s arrest on charges of open murder and resisting and obstructing an officer. Lee appeared in court on Feb. 24 for her arraignment and was denied bond.
