A missing North Carolina teen was found dead last week, and authorities have launched a murder investigation after receiving preliminary autopsy results.

Joseph Rose was reported missing to the Asheville Police Department on December 2, the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office said. Ten days later, they were called to the scene of a body found in Candler and determined it was the missing teen.

Investigators did not say how Rose died or what led them to his body, but Rose’s sister told WLOS that her brother’s body was found in a ditch.

“And we’re not sure how or why,” Emily Ivory Rose said. “Also, the way that they found him. We’re just not sure how he ended up there and why he had no contact with us.”

Emily Rose said that family had last heard from him on November 24.

“He’s just a baby, you know, and he’s just so special. And I just always worried about him,” she said.
