Police in Mississippi are investigating after they found a body inside a large box in a Gulfport home.
Gulfport Police Sgt. Jason Ducre said one person was detained on Thursday and is being questioned, the Biloxi Sun-Herald reported.
Ducre said police were investigating a missing persons report from December 22 on Thursday morning when they encountered the box, which was so large detectives had to cut open an exterior wall to remove it.
Investigators do no know if the body in the box is the person reported missing.
“We just didn’t dig too far into it,” Switzer said, adding that investigators did not want to disturb evidence. “We don’t know if the person is male, female — anything.”
The “makeshift box” — 6 feet long, 3 feet wide, and 2 feet deep — was made of wood and resembled a wall locker with double doors, Switzer said. The box was lying flat “like a coffin” when it was found, and the body was covered in “all kinds of stuff,” including clothing.
Similar boxes were found in the home’s back yard.
The box was taken to a crime lab for unpacking.
