Moises Caicedo signs a new Brighton contract until 2027 despite midfielder begging to leave the club

Moises Caicedo has signed a new contract with Brighton until 2027 despite the Ecuadorian midfielder begging to leave the club for Arsenal in January.

The 21-year-old joined from Ecuadorian club Independiente del Valle in February 2021, but was desperate to force through a move to either Arsenal or Chelsea.

Arsenal showed strong interest and had two offers rejected for him, the second of which was worth £70million.

Caicedo himself also pushed for a move, going public with his pleas on social media, but Brighton stood firm.

Head coach Roberto De Zerbi said: ‘This is a fantastic news for the club, our fans, for me and most importantly for Moises.

‘It will make us stronger as we move forward towards our targets on the pitch.’

The Seagulls also have an option for an extra year on Caicedo, who has made a big impact at the Amex Stadium since making his Premier League debut last April.

Caicedo told Brighton that he wished to leave in an open letter posted on social media.

It read: ‘I am grateful to Mr Bloom and Brighton for giving me the chance to come to the Premier League and I feel I have always done my best for them. I always play football with a smile and with heart.

‘I am the youngest of 10 siblings form a poor upbringing in Santa Domingo in Ecuador. My dream always to be the most decorated player in the history of Ecuador.

‘I am proud to be able to bring in a record transfer fee for Brighton which would allow them to reinvest it and help the club continue to be successful.

‘The fans have taken me into their hearts and they will always be in my heart so I hope they can understand why I want to take up this magnificent opportunity.’

However, he remained on the south coast and has now made 29 Premier League appearances for the Seagulls.

Moises was handed his full Premier League debut in April 2022 in a 2-1 win at Arsenal.

He was left out of the Seagulls’ FA Cup win over Liverpool on January 30 but was reintroduced to the group for the 1-0 win over Bournemouth, where he came off the bench.

The midfielder’s agent hit out at Brighton for denying his ‘dream’ move to Arsenal.

Having failed to sign Caicedo, Arsenal instead brought in Jorginho from Chelsea.
