Just days ago, Tiffanie Lucas, 32, posted photos of herself and her two sons in their Halloween costumes. Now she’s in jail on $2 million bond, accused of killing her own children.
According to the Bullitt County Sheriff’s Office in Kentucky, the injuries the children had were not survivable. The victims were just 6 and 9 years old.
Deputies say a neighbor found Lucas in the driveway of their home in the Shepherdsville area around 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 8. The neighbor went into the home to check on the children and found them both “covered in blood” and suffering from gunshot wounds. First responders rushed the boys to Norton Children’s Hospital in Louisville, but they did not survive.
Lucas was arrested on two murder charges. She appeared in court virtually for the first time on Thursday, where the judge entered a plea of not guilty on her behalf and set her bond.
“The boys were shot in an area that would not be survivable by anyone,” Col. Alex Payne of the Bullitt County Sheriff’s Office told Jesse Weber on Law&Crime’s Sidebar podcast. “They were alive, to the best of our knowledge, when they were transported by EMS to the hospital and passed away at the hospital.”
Col. Payne says the boys’ exact injuries will be detailed in an upcoming autopsy report.
He also explained that while he doesn’t know the motive in this case, his experience in law enforcement provides some insight.
“I can tell you now, in my 40-plus years of being in this line of work, there are three things that I’ve seen. And it can be these things individually or can be these things in combination,” Col. Payne said. “You can have an individual who is suffering from some type of mental illness; you can have an individual who has some type of substance abuse problem; or that individual can simply be just that evil. Or it can be a combination of those things. I haven’t seen any other outliers other than those three. And so right now, I guess it’s anybody’s guess as to what which one of those she covers.”
According to Col. Payne, one of the boys’ fathers is deceased, while the other appears to not be in the picture.
Lucas has another court date scheduled for Nov. 14.
