Mom sent kid to day care with handgun in lunch box: Cops

Shanae D. Davis, a 39-year-old mother from Florida, was arrested and charged with one count of felony child neglect without causing great bodily harm and one misdemeanor count of allowing a minor to obtain a firearm and take it to school after she allegedly sent her child to day care with a Glock 43 9 mm handgun stashed inside of his lunchbox. Davis was taken into custody and the gun was confiscated by the Riviera Beach Police Department.

The incident occurred when a teacher at Jackson’s Daycare Center in Riviera Beach found the gun inside one of the children’s lunchboxes. The teacher had called the emergency dispatcher to report the discovery of the gun, which led to the police being called to the daycare. Upon arrival, the officer contacted Davis, who admitted that the gun was now safely stored in the glove compartment of her vehicle. The officer then confiscated the black and gray weapon from Davis.

Davis explained to police that she normally keeps the gun in her glove box but, due to several break-ins in her apartment complex, she had been taking the gun inside. On the day in question, she placed the gun inside her son’s lunchbox because she does not carry a purse and forgot to take it out. The teacher who found the gun screamed “gun,” and another teacher came to help and check if it was real. When officers arrived, they determined it was a 9mm Glock 43 handgun.

This incident has sparked outrage and concern among parents and the community, with many expressing shock and questioning the safety of their children at daycare. Parents have emphasized the importance of keeping firearms away from children and the need for a clear plan for storing firearms safely. The case serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers of misplacing firearms and the importance of prioritizing child safety 5.

Davis faces charges of child neglect and allowing a minor to obtain a firearm and take it to school. She was released from custody on Friday afternoon, but the case is ongoing, and she will likely face further legal consequences.
