COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (TCD) — A 35-year-old woman who was wanted on suspicion of killing her two young children and injuring a third was located in the United Kingdom and taken into custody.
The Colorado Springs Police Department announced Kimberlee Singler was arrested Dec. 30 “without incident.” The department declined to release any additional information about her arrest or the case itself.
On Dec. 19 just after midnight, Singler called 911 to report a burglary. Officers arrived and found a 9-year-old girl and 7-year-old boy deceased, as well as an injured 11-year-old girl. Singler and the 11-year-old were taken to the hospital for treatment as homicide detectives took over the case.
Investigators determined the burglary call “was unfounded,” and on Dec. 26, Colorado Springs Police detectives obtained a warrant to arrest Singler on four counts of murder, two counts of attempted first-degree murder, three counts of child abuse, and one count of first-degree assault. Singler, however, was last seen Dec. 23, and her whereabouts were unknown until her arrest.
According to KKTV-TV, Singler and her ex-husband, Kevin Wentz, split up in 2018, and have been in the middle of a fraught custody dispute since then. The divorce was finalized two years later, but they still had yet to reach a custody agreement.
The children were identified as Elianna “Ellie” Wentz and Aden Wentz.
KMGH-TV reports in 2021, Singler requested sole custody because she wanted to move to Florida with the children. Wentz fought it and a judge scheduled a hearing in October 2022, but Singler did not show up. She reportedly failed to appear in court multiple times.
In September 2023, Singler reportedly accused Wentz of pointing a knife at her, so she filed for a temporary protection order against him. A judge granted it, but his attorneys filed to dismiss it. A month later, they went back to court regarding parenting time, and a judge determined Wentz did not pose a threat to the children.
According to KMGH, a judge ordered Singler to let Wentz have custody of the children between Dec. 16 and Dec. 31. Singler and Wentz were reportedly supposed to have a custody exchange on Dec. 16 at 9 a.m. at the Colorado Springs Police Department Stetson Hills Substation, but she never showed up.
Reporter Annabelle Childers posted a statement from Wentz’s attorney, which said he “continues to hope for justice for his children Aden and Ellie. He prays for peace and healing for his surviving daughter.”
