Multiple people have been shot on Alabama’s Interstate 59 in Birmingham, prompting police to shut down all lanes of the highway during Friday’s rush hour as they launched an investigation.
Calls about the shooting began coming in to the 911 center at about 4:40 p.m., with the first one reporting masked men firing into occupied vehicles.
Another caller reported a person on the ground outside a vehicle near Bush Boulevard and 20th Street Ensley, AL.com reported, and another call reported a second victim nearby.
Police said they were told that at least two gunshot vitims had been dropped off at the University of Alabama-Birmingham Hospital. It wasn’t clear if they were the same victims reported in the earlier calls. The victims who arrived at the hospital were reported to have non-life-threatening injuries.
Some witnesses reported an exchange of gunfire, but police have not corroborated those reports. Investigations said they have found multiple shell casing in roadway and called the highway a “crime scene.”
Alabama State Police said all lanes on the highway were shut down near the 120 mile marker and would be for the foreseeable future.
