An investigation is under way regarding autopsy photos that were leaked to the public in the Alex Murdaugh murder trial.
After sentencing Murdaugh to life in prison, Judge Clifton Newman revealed that the court was made aware of autopsy photos that were somehow shown to the public. Parties involved in the case have requested an investigation into the matter, though Newman said law enforcement — not him — would carry out the probe as his “hands are full.”
“Based on the direction of the photographs … it did not come from the audience. It came from, somehow, the well of the court,” the judge said.
For reference, the well of the court refers to areas where court proceedings take place, including the jury box, counsel tables, witness stand, and judge’s bench.
Newman did not disclose who those photos depicted or if they were shown during a livestream of the high-profile murder trial. However, during the trial, photos were disseminated on social media which apparently showed Maggie’s dead body. Those images appear to have come from a monitor placed on the prosecution’s table.
It is not immediately known what agency is handling the investigation.
