STATESVILLE, N.C. (TCD) — Deputies arrested a 69-year-old man on suspicion of strangling his wife to death this week.
On Monday, Nov. 13, at around 2:30 a.m., the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Iredell Memorial Hospital emergency room in reference to an “elderly female victim of an assault.” At the scene, deputies discovered that the victim’s husband, Clarence Tyson, brought her to the hospital. Medical staff performed lifesaving measures on the woman, Rebecca Tyson, but she ultimately died of her injuries.
Deputies interviewed Clarence Tyson, and they found out that the two got into a domestic altercation in their home. Authorities subsequently went to the couple’s residence at 141 West Iredell Circle to continue their investigation.
Detectives collected evidence at the home and spoke with witnesses. Further investigation revealed that Clarence Tyson had allegedly “brutally assaulted his wife.” Tyson then brought his unresponsive wife to the hospital for emergency treatment.
The Chief Medical Examiner’s Office completed an autopsy on Tuesday, Nov. 14, and concluded that Rebecca Tyson died of strangulation. She had also sustained other critical injuries from the assault, including multiple broken bones and bruising.
Following the autopsy results, sheriff’s office detectives charged Clarence Tyson with first-degree murder. He remains held without bond.
According to WJZY-TV, Tyson has a criminal history, including past charges of felony larceny by an employee, assault on a female, and driving while impaired.
