Nike Exec Couple Killed by Shifting Lumber on Napa Valley Bike Ride – Crime Online

An Oregon couple died Tuesday while bicycling in California when a lumber load shifted on a flatbed trailer and hit them.

Nike executives Christian Deaton 52, and Michelle Deaton, 48, were on the Silverado Trail in Napa County at sbout 11 a.m. on Tuesday, The Oregonian reported.

The trucker, traveling at about 40 mph, started to pass them, the California Highway Patrol said. As he did, his load shifted to the right, leaving some of it hanging over the side of the trailer, where it struck the Deatons, traveling in the bike lane.

Christian Deaton was pronounced dead on the scene, while his wife succumbed to her injuries at a hospital, California Highway Patrol Officer Vince Pompliana said.

The truck driver, a 55-year-old man from Vallejo, remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators, KNTV reported. Investigators have not said if he will face charges.
