Carrie Ardis Kennedy (Ta Sunka Ota Win) was born on February 06, 1975, to Darrell and Alvina Hump. Carrie was one of five children: David, Carmen, Lyman and Ryan. Carrie grew up on a ranch southwest of Red Scaffold, SD. Carrie loved exploring the pastures, helping her dad and played with the children of visitors that came to see her mom and dad.
Carrie’s education started at Red Scaffold. She was later transferred to the Cheyenne Eagle Butte school and graduated in 1993. Carrie loved sports and participated in cross country, basketball and track. After graduating high school, Carrie set her sights on enlisting in the military. Carrie chose the AirForce enlisting on July 06, and graduated boot camp August 1994. Carrie served proudly and received many medals and awards for excellence. Carrie’s last duty station was in Montana on the Malmstrom Airforce Base.
When Carrie returned to Cheyenne River, she applied for a job with the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe, Telephone Authority and was hired as the Cell One Representative at the CRST Sales and Service building. Carrie met many people while working as the Cell One Representative. Some became very dear friends. That was Carries strength, she made friends that lasted a lifetime.
In 2003, Carrie met the love of her life while working for the Tribe. It seemed that her future husband, Anthony was looking for a cell phone. It was clear Anthony liked what he saw and very impressed with Carries professionalism, her knowledge of the job, attention to detail and the support she supplied when he called with questions. It seemed he called a lot.
A year later, on June 5th, 2004, Carrie and Anthony were married at the All Saints Catholic Church. Their son, Noah arrived in October of 2005 followed by Riley in April 2007 and Rylan in May 2008. Carrie devoted her life to her children. She loved them dearly and taught them to be respectful, to reach for their dreams and never ever quit their pursuit of happiness. She would go “mama bear” on anyone if she felt she had to protect them.
Carrie loved creating things. This ranged from arts and crafts, baking, planting flowers, a garden every year and building her recipe card collection. She handwrote all her cards from cooking or baking magazines and compiled quite a library. Carrie helped making baked items for funerals, her children’s classes when celebrating Halloween, Christmas, Valentines, Saint Patrick’s Day making cookies, brookies (cookie and brownie dough mix) and gifted her creations to friends, relatives and local activities.
During the month of February 2020, Carrie was diagnosed with brain cancer. We made the decision to fight this terrible disease and continue with our promise to raise our family we created. We made every appointment, surgery, consult, infusions to hold this at bay. There was never a cure for the type of cancer she had. Carrie didn’t want people to feel sorry for her, so the decision was made to focus on what the doctors wanted and not on self-pity. Carrie started her journey the evening of January 22, 2025, surrounded by her family at home under hospice care. Carrie was the center of our world. She focused all her energies for her family, and we will hold those precious memories close.
Thank you for the outpouring of support during this difficult time. We can never thank you enough for the expressions of sorrow, love, personal memories and for helping the family in any way. We will not forget your kindness.
