Rex George Flanagan, age 72, of Glencross, SD passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 16, 2025 at Glencross. Â
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 26, 2025 at the Trail City Community Hall in Trail City, SD at 1 p.m. MT with Pastor Barry Woods of Trail City officiating. Â The scattering of his ashes will take place on top of Needle Butte, located east of Trail City. Â The Flanagan family formerly lived and ranched in the area. Â
Rex George Flanagan was born October 14, 1952 at the Lowe Hospital in Mobridge, SD to John W. and Connie L. Flanagan of rural Mobridge/Trail City area. Â He was their youngest of four children. Â He attended school at Trail City and Timber Lake.
 He met and married Pearl Schlomer of Mobridge, SD.  They had three children, John, George and a baby girl, Jody who died at birth.  He later married Betty at Belle Fourche, they had two children, Howdy and Candy. Â
Rex worked at many occupations during his life. Â He was a cattle rancher. Â He custom built various kinds of fences with his Dad, John. Â He spent many years as a truck driver throughout the U.S. Â He lived many years in Nisland, SD and was the city maintenance man along with various other jobs near there.
Rex moved back to Timber Lake, SD area in 2010 where he spent his time helping out on area ranches and cooking at local cafes. Â His love of people along with his skills in the kitchen made him a favorite breakfast cook in Timber Lake and Isabel. Â At the time of his death, he had just recently retired as breakfast cook at The Corner Bar & Grill in Timber Lake. Â He cared deeply for family and friends.
He is survived by two sisters – Charlotte O’Leary of Faith, SD and Stella (Dave) Ager of Belle Fourche, SD;  his four children – John (Joy) Flanagan of Minot, ND, George (Lisa) of Grand Forks, ND, Howdy (Amanda) Flanagan of Casper, WY and Candy (James) Flanagan of Gillette, WY and ten grandchildren – Stephen, Grace, Conner and Faith Flanagan; Khori and Shawn Flanagan; Braedan and Waylon Flanagan and Wyatt and Hayden Kidd.  He is also survived by nephews Daris LaPlante, Gaylord (Jessica) LaPlante, Sidney (Kenna) LaPlante, Michael O’Leary and Tom (Lindsey) Flanagan; one niece Kelly Flanagan.
He is preceded in death by his parents John and Connie Flanagan, infant daughter Jody and brother Blaine Flanagan, sister-in-law Ilene Flanagan, brother-in-laws Donald LaPlante and Michael O’Leary and great-nephew Liam Flanagan.
All family and friends are considered as Honorary Pallbearers. Â
The family of Rex would like to invite everyone to stay for the luncheon being served after the services. Â The cremains will then be taken to his final resting place up on Needle Butte.
