UPPER CHICHESTER TOWNSHIP, Pa. (TCD) — Police recently arrested a 51-year-old man on suspicion of neglecting his mother, who they found in soiled sheets stuck to the bed.
According to a news release from the Upper Chichester Township Police Department, on Sunday, April 7, at around 12:20 p.m., officers responded to a home on Dresner Circle to conduct a welfare check. A neighbor noticed bags of unopened food and stacks of packages outside the home. They knocked on the front and rear doors, but no one answered, so they contacted police to request a welfare check.
Responding officers also noticed the boxes and food at the door. They tried knocking and ringing the doorbell without success. When searching the back of the home, police noticed flies on the windows and a “large amount of trash on the floor.”
Officers eventually forced entry into the home because they believed residents inside were possibly deceased or experiencing a medical emergency. Once inside, police made contact with Daniel Klein, and they saw large amounts of trash and packages inside the front door and in the entryway, which had made it difficult to open the door. Additionally, police noticed a strong odor inside the residence.
Officers asked the defendant to bring them to his mother, and he led them to the primary bedroom, where he said she was sleeping. There were reportedly packages and trash throughout the home, and the foul odor continued as officers walked toward the victim.
Inside the primary bedroom, Klein’s mother was reportedly in the bed with a blanket covering her. She was unconscious but breathing, and officers called emergency medical services personnel to the scene. According to police, the blanket on top of the woman was soiled.
Officials removed the blanket and saw that the lower half of her body was covered with dried feces and maggots. Her toenails were reportedly shaped like “ram’s horns.”
According to police, the victim was “fused to the bed” and bed sheets. Officials transported Klein’s mother to Crozer Chester Medical Center to undergo evaluation and treatment.
Officers arrested Klein, and he was charged with abuse of a care-dependent person and recklessly endangering another person. His bail was set at $50,000.
