A man died at a Utah airport on Monday after he reportedly bypassed security and climbed into a passenger jet engine.
A store manager at Salt Lake City International Airport reported seeing a 30-year-old man use an emergency exit — prompting a 20-minute search that ended with the discovery of his body in the intake cowling of a wing-mounted plane engine.
The Salt Lake City Tribune reported that the plane’s engine was off when the man was found, but the aircraft was loaded with passengers on a de-icing pad.
A Delta Airlines spokesperson told KSL that a California-bound plane with 95 passengers was returned to the gate and canceled amid reports of a person on a de-icing pad on the tarmac. KSL reported that the man was found unresponsive in a California-bound plane, but it is unclear whether it was the Delta Airlines plane that was returned to the gate.
Officials have not publicly named the deceased man. His death remains under investigation.
