Perry Hughes, 34, was arrested on Tuesday, March 14, and charged with one count of second-degree murder, tampering with evidence, and felony charges in possession of a handgun.

On Tuesday, Memphis Police Department officers received a call at approximately 5.02 am informing them about a shooting inside a residence situated on Prescott Street. After the officers arrived at the scene, they were approached by two people living in the residence who said that their two roommates argued at a birthday celebration which led to a man named Antonio allegedly being shot multiple times, reported Law and Crime.

Antonio’s body was hidden upside down in a trash bin
According to an affidavit, when the responding officers entered the house, they found Hughes who was “barricaded” in his bedroom. The police said, “After a short standoff, officers were able to talk Perry Hughes out of his room and placed him into custody. Officers then located the victim inside a city trash bin upside down and covered in trash. The trash bin was placed inside Perry Hughes’ bedroom.” Antonio was pronounced dead at the scene. Inside Hughes’ bedroom, two handguns were found in “plain view” and police observed that the hallway floor was wet and seemed recently mopped.
A search warrant was quickly obtained and executed where police discovered three bullet holes in the dining room and kitchen wall, multiple cartridge casings hidden in the kitchen, and found blood on the baseboard, bathroom floor, and in the hallway.
What happened at the birthday party?
The alleged murderer wanted to host a birthday party for one of the roommates by playing dominos and drinking. During the party, Antonio and Hughes “became intoxicated and began to argue over $10.” The argument quickly escalated and turned physical and leading to Hughes fatally shooting Antonio.
“[A roommate] stated that Antonio then moved to hit Hughes and that Hughes fired one shot that missed. [The roommate] then stated that Hughes then fired another shot which he believed struck Antonio who then covered his face and turned as if to run away. [The roommate] then advised that is when Hughes ‘unloaded on’ Antonio,” stated the affidavit, according to Law and Crime.
