He was entrusted to protect his community — and was even assigned to patrol a high school — but now former Pennsylvania police officer Tyler Humphreys faces a number of sordid criminal charges including the rape and assault of three minors.
Humphreys, 21, an officer for the Sharon Hill Borough Police Department until his termination last week, was charged on Dec. 15 with rape of a child, statutory sexual assault, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse and other offenses, according to a statement from the Chester County District Attorney’s office obtained Monday by Law&Crime.
Pennsylvania State Police said they first received a report this November regarding suspected child abuse by Humphreys that had begun in 2014 when he was 12.
That abuse had continued through 2018, prosecutors said, and at the time of the assault, the victim was a 9-year-old boy who was “forced to perform oral sex on multiple occasions” on Humphreys and that those episodes occurred in East Whiteland Township in Chester County, Pennsylvania.
While investigating this first report, a second tip came in. This time it was Humphreys’ alleged second victim, a 15-year-old girl who claimed that he got her “intoxicated, moved her into a bedroom, removed her clothing and then raped her.”
Prosecutors noted that at the time of this alleged offense, Humphreys was an adult.
A third victim also reported being assaulted by the Sharon Hill Police officer from Nov. 23, 2022, to Dec. 2, 2022. The victim, who was 19 years old at the time, reported that Humphreys had assaulted her in her sleep.
She said she went to sleep without any pain but when she woke up, her vagina hurt. Humphreys was next to her, asleep and wearing only his underwear, she said.
This wasn’t her first run-in with him, either.
The woman alleged she had known pain at Humphreys’ hands before when she was 11 and he was a minor too.
From 2014 to 2018, this third victim alleged that Humphreys had “grabbed her breasts and touched her inappropriately.”
“Victim #3 related that he pulled her onto his lap and held her there against her will,” Chester County district attorney Deborah Ryan wrote in a statement announcing Humphreys’ arrest.
He had “forced her to touch him inappropriately” and then threatened her and told her not to tell anyone, she added.
“This shocking and unconscionable criminal behavior is beyond comprehension. This a man who took an oath to uphold the laws of our Constitution and this Commonwealth, and he violated our most vulnerable and innocent victims. The defendant deprived them of normal childhoods for his own depraved sexual gratification,” Ryan said.
Prosecutors say the 21-year-old officer was working for Sharon Hill Borough PD full-time when he was arrested and that he was assigned to work as a school resource officer for Academy Park High School, also in Sharon Hill. He was working part-time for the Folcroft Borough Police Department, too, the district attorney said, though it is unclear whether any of the alleged criminal acts occurred while he was employed there.
A spokesperson for the Sharon Hill Borough Police Department told Philadelphia ABC affiliate WPVI that all of the allegations against Humphreys occurred before he worked for their department.
Humphreys appears in court next Tuesday. He was released from custody after posting $275,000 bail, prosecutors said.
