Prosecutors in North Carolina said they would seek the death penalty for a realtor who went on a wild shooting spree in January, ultimately killing three people.
The Pitt County District Attorney’s Office made the announcment at a hearing for 55-year-old David Lever on Friday, WITN reported.
Lever is charged with the murders of his neighbor, 64-year-old Enrique Reyes, and Anthony and Paula Gribble, 80 and 76, as CrimeOnline reported. He was the Gribbles’ realtor when they bought their home in 2014.
Pitt County Sheriff Paula Dance said at the time of Lever’s arrest that investigators found dozens of weapons and ammunition in the van that he drove to his multiple several crime scenes as well as his home.
Reyes was the first to die in Lever’s spree, gunned down in his driveway. Lever was seen driving away from Reyes’ home shortly after the shooting and arriving at a gas station minutes later. There, he put gas in his van and then fired out his open window as he drove away. Deputies were called to the scene, but no one was hurt in the that shooting.
From that scene Lever drove to another neighborhood, where he tried to make contact with the residents of a home. By the time they got to the door, however, he was backing out of the driveway. The residents did not recognize him.
Then, just before 2:30, the sheriff’s office got a call from a man who said that Lever had just killed his parents, and he was holding him at gunpoint until deputies could arrive. Deputies arrived to find the Gribbles dead from multiple gunshot wounds and took Lever into custody without incident.
After Lever’s arrest and while deputies were at his home, they received a call from a passerby who had seen Reyes’ body in his driveway.
The sheriff said deputies were also called for a breaking and entering nearby, which turned out to be shots fired into an unoccupied residence. She said that Lever is the suspect in that case as well.
Dance further said that investigators believe the Gribbles’ son prevent further violent acts.
