Long Island serial killer suspect Rex Heuermann is expected in court Wednesday morning for a brief conference, and his wife is expected to attend for the first time.
Asa Ellerup filed for divorce days after Heuermann’s arrest for the murders of Amber Lynn Costello, Megan Waterman, and Melissa Barthelemy in July. Their bodies were found, along with that of Maureen Brainerd-Barnes, on Gilgo Beach in December 2010. Investigators have repeatedly said since that time that they are close to charging the 60-year-old architect with Brainerd-Barnes’ murder but have not yet done so.
Ellerup visited her husband for the first time earlier this month, as CrimeOnline reported, and her attorney, Robert Macedonio, subsequently said she intended to attend court proceedings in the future.
“She wants to see and hear the evidence that’s presented in court,” said Macedonio, who said he would be with her on Wednesday. “The only thing she knows about this case is what’s been reported in the media … If this happened, he was living a complete double life.”
Macedonio said that Ellerup would not be making any public statements, Newsday reported.
Wednesday’s court appearance is a conference to be held in the chambers of State Supreme Court Justice Timothy Mazzei, who is expected to rule on requests by media outlets to record the proceedings, court spokesperson Timothy Finnerty said.
Heuermann was linked to the killings by DNA and cell phone data, investigators have said
