Shane Lamar Evans pleads guilty to role in fatal shooting of Michigan woman who was wrapped in Christmas lights
Wayne County court records show Shane Lamar Evans entered the plea Friday, April 7, after initially pleading not guilty to homicide and first-degree home invasion in December 2020 in connection with the death of 27-year-old Egypt Covington. As part of the plea deal, prosecutors dismissed those two charges.
The two other suspects, Timothy Eugene Moore and Shandon Ray Groom, are still awaiting trial. Groom’s pretrial conference is scheduled for April 14, while Moore’s jury trial begins in July.
Groom is charged with felony murder, first-degree home invasion, first-degree premeditated murder, and three felony firearms charges. Moore will stand trial for first-degree premeditated murder, felony murder, first-degree home invasion, felon in possession of a firearm, and four felony firearm counts.

WJBK-TV reports Evans, Moore, and Groom went to the duplex where Covington lived because they planned to steal marijuana from one of her neighbors. Evans reportedly pointed out the neighbor’s residence but claimed he did not want to participate in the actual burglary. Moore and Groom allegedly went into the wrong side of the duplex and shot and killed Covington instead of stealing from her neighbor. They allegedly wrapped her body in Christmas lights after she died.
According to WJBK, Evans worked as a maintenance man at Covington’s complex and knew that the neighbor who had marijuana would be out of town.
Moore allegedly texted Evans after the shooting and asked if he wanted to know what occurred inside the home, and Evans reportedly responded, “No, don’t never wanna know what happened.”
Evans will be sentenced May 4.
