A California man is behind bars for allegedly murdering his 71-year-old father and telling cops he had to “finish the job” because the victim owed him $5,000.

Alfred Juarez Jr., 49, stands accused of murder, cruelty to an elderly person with great bodily harm, robbery, and carjacking in the death of Alfred Juarez Sr., according to court records. The younger Juarez remains in the Kern County Jail without bond. His next court date is scheduled for Oct. 27.

Bakersfield police responded around 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 13 to a home in the 6100 block of Chandler Way due to a report of an unresponsive man, local NBC affiliate KGET reported. When officers arrived, they found the victim, who showed signs of being assaulted, and he was pronounced dead. Cops arrested his son in Los Angeles County.

KGET obtained a probable cause arrest affidavit, which stated that cops reviewed surveillance video that captured the incident. It reportedly showed the victim walking out of the home with his son in pursuit. Juarez Jr. “violently” pushed open the screen door and punched his father in the head, the affidavit said.

The suspect then allegedly spun the victim around and snatched his car keys from his belt. At that point, the victim grabbed his chest and fell to the ground, and Juarez Jr. left with his father”s vehicle, cops said.

During an interview, the younger Juarez reportedly said his father owed him $5,000, so he showed up to the home to take his vehicle. The suspect said he became upset when his dad told him to leave, and he said he went inside the home to “finish the job,” per the affidavit. The suspect also reportedly said he knew the elder Juarez had a history of heart attacks and was in poor health. He had no remorse for his actions, he allegedly added.

Juarez Jr. reportedly made similar statements after an alleged assault caused the victim to have a heart attack in 2020.
