A 14-year-old California boy told police that an intruder murdered his parents and seriously injured his younger sister, but investigators believe it was the teen who committed the attack, ABC30 reports.
“Two children have lost their mother and father due to the actions by their other sibling,” Fresno County Sheriff John Zanoni told reporters at a press conference on Friday, according to the television station.
Zanoni said that around 7:40 p.m. Wednesday, the boy called 911 to report a man broke into his family’s home in Miramonte, a rural suburb of Fresno, attacked his loved ones with a knife and gun, and then drove away in a silver pickup truck.
When deputies arrived at the scene, the boy’s parents were dead and his 11-year-old sister had been wounded severely, according to the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office.
Medics rushed the girl to an area hospital, where she underwent surgery. She is expected to survive but was in critical condition. A 7-year-old boy was also home at the time of the attack and was not wounded physically.
Police interviewed the 14-year-old who called 911 and found what they alleged were inconsistencies in his account of what happened.
“The evidence ultimately showed that he had fabricated the story of a break-in and was responsible for using multiple weapons to attack his mom, his dad and his sister,” Fresno County Sheriff John Zanoni told reporters at a press conference on Friday, according to ABC30.
Authorities identified the parents as Lue Yang and Se Vang, both 37 years old and married, NBC News reports.
The teen has been charged with two counts of murder and one count of attempted murder. Because he is a minor, the teen’s name has not been released publicly.
Police have not yet determined a motive for the attack. There was no record of previous interactions between law enforcement and the family, according to ABC30.
