HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (TCN) — A 24-year-old man is in custody on suspicion of hitting his 61-year-old mother on the head with a hammer.
According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, on June 11, deputies responded to a home on Holly Way after Robert Babin allegedly struck his mother.
Per court documents reviewed by KTRK-TV, a friend called law enforcement after Babin reportedly confessed to them via a gaming app that he assaulted his mother with a hammer, writing, “I am in trouble, and I need your help. I just assaulted my mother with a hammer, I got angry, I don’t know what to do, I can’t go to prison. I have to get rid of the hammer and destroy the evidence before the police get there. I don’t want to end up on Death Row. I hit her a few times on the head and the side. She’s barely breathing.”
Responding deputies found the victim in the backyard “barely breathing with serious bodily injuries.” As of June 12, the sheriff’s office said the victim remains hospitalized in critical condition.
Babin allegedly told authorities his mother was napping at home when he left to go to the store. According to KTRK, Babin seemed confused why police were there and repeatedly said he didn’t know what had happened.
The sheriff’s office took Babin into custody. He faces a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and remains held in the Harris County Jail on $150,000 bond.
