Jim Gordon, who passed away on March 13, 2023 while serving his punishment in jail, had a striking professional career until his mental health started deteriorating in the early 1970s.

The late musician claimed to have voices in his mind, which he mentioned “started off kindly, they were giving me little instructions,” but later, “I was required to make sacrifices, and I was forced to do what they said” afterward.

Gordon claimed that he frequently heard his mom’s voice, which tormented him and commanded him to eat less.

He was abusive to a number of partners, and he struggled with alcohol and heroin as he used them to numb his mental illness. Yet, despite numerous medical interventions, he didn’t stick with his treatment program.

Moreover, on June 3 1983, the late musician killed his 71-year-old widowed mom, Osa Marie (Beck) Gordon, with a knife and hammer, then stabbed her fatally with a butcher knife; Jim stated that a voice asked him to kill her.

The court acknowledged that Gordon had paranoid schizophrenia, but due to revisions in California law that put a high bar on insanity defenses, Jim was convicted guilty of second-degree murder.

The late musician refused to speak with his attorneys after being imprisoned, and he frequently skipped taking his medication for his mental illness.
