The dispute over the electric bicycle originated when Mr. Thomas had his bicycle stolen in October 2022. In March of the subsequent year, Mr. Thomas identified his bicycle being ridden by Boyce, and after a confrontation, Boyce returned the bicycle. However, Boyce issued threats of retaliation, visiting Mr. Thomas’s partner’s workplace and demanding the return of the bicycle.

The fatal stabbing occurred on April 26, 2023, when Boyce, Daly, and Stephenson spotted the bicycle parked outside a shop in King’s Heath. Boyce confronted Mr. Thomas, brandishing a knife, and pursued him, inflicting multiple strikes. Daly joined the pursuit, while Stephenson seized the bicycle. Subsequently, the three individuals fled the scene.

Following the assault, Daly was apprehended on April 27, and Boyce, who had fled to Scunthorpe, was captured the following day. Two weeks later, Stephenson surrendered himself into custody after a public appeal by West Midlands Police to identify the third suspect.

Detective Inspector Jim Colclough from the force’s homicide investigations team characterized the attack as a brutal act of revenge by Boyce, who felt aggrieved by Mr. Thomas allegedly taking what he believed to be his bicycle. The sentences were viewed as a form of justice for Mr. Thomas’s family, who were profoundly affected by his untimely death.
