A tragic murder suicide in Tennessee has left a mother and father dead and their adult son in critical condition.
According to the Dyer County Sheriff’s Office, 60-year-old Sherry Darlene Lydon is suspected of fatally shooting her husband, William John Lydon Jr., while he slept at their home in Lenox. She reportedly also shot their 24-year-old son before fleeing the scene.
First responders airlifted her son to a regional trauma center, where he remains in critical condition.
After the shooting, Lydon drove down I-155 going the wrong way, where it is believed she intentionally collided head-on with an 18-wheeler. Authorities described the crash as “an apparent attempt to commit suicide.”
Lydon later died from her injuries at the hospital. The truck driver was uninjured, according to Action News 5.
Investigators are examining Lydon’s medical history as a potential contributing factor. Preliminary reports indicate she had recently undergone surgery and experienced severe night terrors, anxiety, and sleep disturbances.
Sheriff Jeff Box described the incident as “incredibly tragic” and stated that there is no ongoing threat to the public.
The Dyer County Criminal Investigation Division is currently processing evidence and interviewing witnesses.
“This is an incredibly tragic situation that has affected our community deeply,” said Dyer County Sheriff Jeff Box.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the Lydon family during this difficult time, and we ask for your continued patience as we navigate this investigation.”
