What should happen to a wedding ring after a divorce? It depends on who you ask. There are legal considerations and sentimental factors that determine if the jewelry will be returned to the purchaser or remain with the recipient, as some consider the ring to be marital property and others categorize it as a gift.
Well, in the case of ex-spouses Tom Schwartz and Katie Maloney, the latter got to keep her jaw-dropping sparkler.
Tom Schwartz shares the story behind Katie Maloney’s wedding ring
Tom revealed this during an episode of his Retox Detox podcast with special guest Kyle Chan, the celebrity jeweler who has created next-level pieces for numerous Bravolebrities. Toward the end of the interview, which was filmed on what would’ve been Tom and Katie’s ninth anniversary, Tom reflected on the heart-shaped ring he presented to Katie during their second wedding ceremony.

“My favorite thing you ever made me, personally, was for me and Katie’s second wedding at Caesars [Palace] in Las Vegas,” the Vanderpump Rules alum told Kyle. “We found a heart-shaped tanzanite diamond. I think it was 13 carats. We set it in rose gold, and Katie still has it. It’s one of the most — and I’m not flexing here — I just think, objectively, it’s one of the most beautiful rings.”
“I love that ring,” Kyle responded. “I still want to see it on her.”

Katie revealed her wedding ring in a September 2020 Instagram post, showcasing its incredible glow-up courtesy of Kyle. The jeweler later confirmed he and Tom found the heart-shaped stone at a gem convention in Tucson, Arizona.

“Schwartz went with me to my yearly gem hunting in the desert last year,” Kyle told Page Six. “And he picked out this beautiful supersize tanzanite for Katie. Schwartz did well. He went all out to find her the heart from the ocean.”
Kyle said the tanzanite was a “whopping 15 carats” and was set in a 14-karat rose gold band. He told the outlet that the stone, alone, “could easily retail for $35,000.”
“I just love that we made a trip to find that purple heart-shaped tanzanite,” he continued. “That was the best experience ever, even for me as a jeweler. Who gets to go with one of their best friends to pick out stones? Hunting gemstones is always fun, but hunting for one that’s so meaningful is next level.”
Tom Schwartz jokingly questions if Kyle Chan “jinxed” his marriage
Tom and Katie’s first wedding went down in August 2016 in Northern California; however, it was later revealed that the ceremony wasn’t legally binding as they failed to submit the proper paperwork. The pair officially tied the knot in Sin City in 2019, about three years before Katie filed for divorce.
Tom touched on the split during his sitdown with Kyle, pointing out that the jeweler had also created wedding/engagement rings for estranged couple Brittany Cartwright and Jax Taylor.
“None of the relationships lasted on Vanderpump Rules,” Tom said. “Do you think it was your jewelry that jinxed them?”
“No,” Kyle replied, insisting he’s designed rings for plenty of couples who have remained together. “I think it’s a Vanderpump curse. It’s not a Kyle Chan curse.”
