Eight people were killed – 5 of them children – when Kane Aaron Hammock drove his tanker truck into the back of a van, setting off the chain-reaction crash.
The driver of a semi-truck who caused a crash on Interstate 85 in Georgia on Monday has been arrested.
Investigators say Kane Aaron Hammock, 33, was following too closely and rammed into a van, setting off a six-vehicle chain reaction, WAGA reported. The van burst into flames, and all eight people inside the van — including five children — died.
Hammock was charged with 12 misdemeanors, including homicide by vehicle, feticide by vehicle, distracted driving, following too closely, and operating a vehicle without a current plate, and given a $93,000 bond.
The identities of the victims of the crash have not been released, but the Jackson County Coroner’s Office told WXIA the victims ranged in age from 2 to 42 and that they all came from the same family.
The northbound lanes of the major highway were shutdown for hours about 60 miles northeast of Atlanta.
The crash also destroyed a transport van for animal rescue organization FurKids, which was bringing 37 cats to Vermont from Georgia. The organization said its driver was briefly hospitalized with injuries and 35 of the cats were found — with one hospitalized at the University of Georgia Veterinary Hospital – while two others escaped and fled after the crash. The organization said they are actively looking for the missing cats.
