A University of Georgia student is in critical condition, according to family members, after she fell ill in Mexico during Spring Break.
Channel 2 Action News reports that 21-year-old Liza Burke is currently in a coma after taking a trip with her friends to Cabo San Lucas. According to a GoFundMe page set up to help the family, Burke was initially doing fine and enjoying her vacation, then began complaining of a headache.
“At breakfast, she complained of a headache and went back to the room to rest. A few hours later, her friends called the doctor because they couldn’t wake her,” the GFM page reads. “She was immediately rushed to the hospital where she was diagnosed with Arteriovenous malformation (AVM) which cause her brain to hemorrhage.”
According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, AVM happens “when a group of blood vessels in your body forms incorrectly;” veins and arteries “are unusually tangled and form direct connections.”
Friends and loved ones said Burke, who’s known as the “life of the party,” had never previously been diagnosed with any genetic conditions.
Donors contributed over $120,000 to the GFM, allowing the family to arrange travel arrangements to bring her home. WSOC-TV reports Burke made it to Jacksonville, to her mother’s home, but still has a long road to recovery.
Burke, from Asheville, North Carolina, is a senior at the University of Georgia, studying business. Family members said she was recently offered a job in Charlotte and scheduled to begin work after graduation.
