A 32-year-old man shot by Houston police last week had been previously charged in Nevada with crimes involving children.
According to FOX 26 Houston, authorities in Clark County, Nevada, charged Jacques Bassey with 13 crimes involving children. The crimes, in part, include human trafficking, sexual assault on a child (multiple counts), and aggravated kidnapping of a minor.
In October 2024, he took a plea deal and admitted to a sexual seduction charge. A Clark County judge allowed Bassey to remain free until sentencing in January 2025.
Bassey, however, fled to Houston shortly after his plea.
Last year, while in Houston, police arrested Bassey for allegedly stealing from the elderly. Then, during a traffic stop earlier this month, he reportedly opened fire on Houston officers 5000 block of Antoine Drive.
“He believed he was wanted and that’s the reason he decided to shoot it out with officers,” Douglas Griffith, President of the Houston Police Officers Union, said.
Following a high-speed chase, Bassey allegedly exited his vehicle and fled down a sidewalk with a firearm, a witness told KHOU.
Security footage showed the suspect hiding behind vehicles as he opened fire on two officers, who were not injured. The officers returned fire and shot Bassey, who still had on his GPS monitor from the Nevada case.
First responders took him to an area hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.
“We’ve seen this play out in Harris County multiple times. Only this time, it happens in Nevada, but it came back to haunt us in Houston,” Andy Kahan, with Houston Crime Stoppers, told FOX 26.
According to Houston PD, authorities charged with Bassey with two counts of attempted capital murder of a police officer and evading arrest, following the incident.
