Virginia police shot and killed a man in the process of butchering his family with 10-inch, curved dagger that resembled a meat cleaver.
A woman in her 30s, described as the attackers daughter, and another woman in her 50s — the attacker’s wife — were killed.
Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis said his department received two 911 calls shortly after 5 a.m. — one from a neighbor who heard a commotion at the apartment and the other from a man who lived at the apartment who found his father-in-law stabbing his wife — the man’s daughter — and mother-in-law Monday morning.
“The son-in-law was cleaning snow off his car in the parking lot and heard a disturbance in his apartment,” Davis said. “The son-in-law goes back into the apartment and finds his wife suffering from stab wounds.”
The father-in-law was stabbing his own wife as the son-in-law entered, and then the father-in-law then began attacking him.
The chaos — the “bloodbath,” as Davis described it — was surrounding the younger couple’s 1-year-old baby, who was not physically harmed in the vicious attack.
Officers arrived minutes later and found the father-in-law stabbing the younger man. When he refused multiple commands to drop his knife, one of the officers opened fire, killing him.
The daughter was pronounced dead on the scene, while the man’s wife and son-in-law were rushed to a hospital in “grave, grave condition.” The wife was pronounced dead at the hospital.
“Thankfully the baby was unharmed,” Davis said. “To desxrive this scene as bloody is an understatement.”
Davis said there have been no prior calls for service at the apartment, and officers are working to make next-of-kin notifications and locate family members to take custody of the baby.
