A self-professed “political candidate,” who appeared on his Instagram account posing for pictures with local politicians, is now charged with murdering his mother. Cops in New York City allege Vladislav Deshkovich, 30, killed Inna Deshkovich, 52, in a fight over money.
Officers responded Friday at 7:33 p.m. to a 911 call of an assault inside a home on 93rd Street in the Bay Ridge neighborhood of Brooklyn, police said.
They found Inna Deshkovich with multiple stab wounds to her neck. Paramedics pronounced her dead at the scene. Officers arrested her son the following morning.
Anne Sgoupis, a neighbor of the victim, told The NY Post that the woman’s ex-husband told police his son had wanted to talk to his mother about money.
“That he wanted money,” she reportedly said. “He needed money.”
The defendant lives in a different apartment building, also in Bay Ridge.
“He seemed strange,” a neighbor of Vladislav Deshkovich, who declined to give a name, told The New York Daily News. “He just seemed off in a way.”
Another neighbor, Hector Lopez, described defendant Deshkovich as seeming like a “smart guy.” He saw him in a building elevator two days before the killing, he said.
“It didn’t seem like anything was bothering him,” Lopez said. “I wouldn’t figure he would do something like that. He was always cordial.”
Vladislav Deshkovich described himself on his Instagram account as a “political candidate.” Recent pictures on his rather scant page show him posing with local politicians. It does not seem like he had any meaningful foothold in the scene. One of those politicians, City Councilman Ari Kagan, R-Brooklyn, downplayed their link.
“He volunteered for me once,” he told the Post. “I met him like three times. He likes to post photos all the time.”
Defendant Deshkovich had started a limited liability corporation in June called “Vlad Deshkovich for State Assembly,” according to The New York Daily News.
The outlet obtained a complaint in which it appeared that Inna Deshkovich had been stabbed seven times in the neck and shoulders, and three times in the face. Vladislav Deskovich allegedly said he punched his mother twice earlier in the evening.
The judge reportedly ordered him held without bail, and that he receive psychiatric care.
Mitchell Jakuboski, a neighbor of the mother, told WCBS that some neighbors heard her screaming. One went to check on her.
“She came up and knocked on the door,” Jakuboski said. “The son answered the door. He said, ‘Oh, I hit my mother in the head. I gotta take her to the hospital,’ and he shut the door.”
Another neighbor, identified only as Tim, told the Post that arguments were common at the home for years.
“They would get heated,” he said. “They’d yell at each other back and forth, in I think Russian, we would hear the screaming.”
Defendant Deshkovich is scheduled for a hearing to take place on Thursday.
Inna Deshkovich “was a doctor in Belarus or Russia, and she was trying to get her license here. She went to work every day,” Jakuboski told WCBS. “She was such a sweet lady. I’m gonna miss her. I really am.”
