Scaachi Koul is a Canadian-born writer of Indian-Kashmiri descent.

Scaachi was born and raised in Calgary, Alberta. She started her career by freelancing while studying at the Ryerson School of Journalism, which is a part of Toronto Metropolitan University.

She studied there from 2009 until her graduation in 2012 and wrote for Maclean’s the whole time.

She then rebranded her column to “Scaach-22” the following year. The title is a mix of her name and the famous novel Catch-22.

The book was lauded for covering various topics like family, feminism, race, and body image. She also talked from her perspective, which made her perspective unique as an Indo-Canadian woman growing up in the suburbs of Calgary.

Her career has seen some hiccups as she was once embroiled in controversy after talking about how journals should not take any submissions from caucasian men, which led to threats that made her deactivate her Twitter account.

This acclaim has led to many awards, such as being shortlisted for a nomination for 2018’s Stephen Leacock Award for best book of humour in English.
