A Wisconsin man has been arrested and charged with attempted murder for a shooting that left a relative and the man’s 2-year-old granddaughter wounded last week.
A criminal complaint against 65-year-old Pao Lee says that Lee went into the kitchen of a Sheboygan business at about 10 a.m. on September 5 and initially exchanged pleasantries with the adult victim, who was helping his granddaughter get milk, according to WITI. Then, according to the complaint, “Lee went into his waistband, got a gun, and put it right into (the victim’s) face.”
“(The victim) remembered hearing Lee say something to the effect of, you want to die today?,” the complaint says. “(The victim) explained that he immediately went to grab the gun to push it up in the air and just remembered several shots going off.”
The victim and another person wrestled the gun away from Lee and “threw it against a tree” and asked someone to call 911.
Police arrived and found the victim and the toddler shot and wounded. Witnesses were holding Lee down, the complaint said. They recovered the gun from where witnesses said they threw it and found in the kitchen a fired 9mm cartridge, a fired bullet, and “some evidence of the wood frame around a door having been struckt by a bullet.” A bullet hole was also found in the wall of an office area next to the kitchen.
In an interview, Lee told detectives he had found messages on his wife’s phone from the victim and said the messages were “sexual in nature.”
“Lee said he decided he wanted to kill (the victim) and then kill himself,” the complaint said., telling officers he “was going to shoot (the victim) and then shoot himself, but he thought his gun jammed.”
“He said he did not know that he shot the baby,” the complaint says.
Investigators said Lee’s wife “denied any sort of marital infidelity” and told them that she had an argument with Lee a week before the shooting when he accused her of having a relationship with the victim.
Police said the toddler, who was shot in the chest, is expected to recover. She was airlifted to Children’s Wisconsin in Milwaukee, WISN reported.
Lee has been charged with reckless injury as well as attempted murder.
