Woman, 24, Found Dead in Trash Compactor at Luxury Manhattan Condo – Crime Online

A woman’s body was found in a trash compactor at a luxury Manhattan condo Friday, prompting a large police presence and concern among neighbors, WABC-TV reports.

The body was found around 2:40 p.m. Friday at the bottom of a trash chute in the basement of the building at 540 W. 28th St. in Chelsea.

The woman was found unresponsive and was pronounced dead at the scene; she had trauma to her body and head, according to the New York Post, citing unnamed police sources.

Numerous investigators and police officers were seen Friday evening inside the property, where a two-bedroom unit recently was sold for north of $2 million. Residents there expressed sorrow for the woman and were also unnerved by the situation.

“It’s terrible. Man, I feel awful for that person,” one unnamed resident told the Post.

That resident said he was told by a doorman that a maintenance worker had come upon the body. The man’s partner, whose name also was not published, told the Post: “It’s a little alarming because we live here.”

The couple said they were asked by investigators whether they had heard of any domestic disputes in the building the previous night.

But WABC-TV reports that police do not suspect a crime and that the woman may have fallen down the trash chute. She did not live in the building and it was unclear how she entered the property. Police have identified the woman, who was 24 years old, but her identity has not been released publicly.

Security footage reviewed by WNBC-TV appeared to show the woman stumbling down a street on Thursday evening and was attempting to open doors as she walked.

“Definitely wouldn’t expect that at all. We have great security in the building, our doors are always locked, we have lots of cameras, just honestly upsetting to hear that happened,” an unnamed resident told WABC-TV.
