A Florida woman claimed she was playing a game when she allegedly walked into Walmart and stole as much merchandise as she could without getting caught.
Spoiler alert: She got caught.
A concerned citizen contacted the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office last week to report a shoplifter at a Palm Coast Walmart. The woman, later identified as 30-year-old Amber McCann, allegedly filled a shopping cart full of items and walked out of the store without paying.
Body camera video posted to the sheriff’s office Facebook page shows deputies confronting McCann in the parking lot. When they asked which car she put the merchandise in, she claimed she just put the items and her purse in a “random” vehicle because she saw deputies coming. She went on to explain she was playing a game called “21.”
“It’s basically like you go and steal all the s— you can steal and you get out without getting caught,” she said. “I did it one other time but I got caught this time. So now I gotta figure out where my purse is and where my merchandise is because now I gotta give all my merchandise back to Walmart.”
One deputy told McCann that it’s not really a game because she was stealing. McCann insisted the game is “really fun.”
“So going to jail is fun?” a deputy said. “OK.”
McCann later changed her story and said the car she put the items in was not random but was rented by her boyfriend. Deputies continued to press her about the location of the items so they could determine the dollar figure and whether it was enough to send McCann to jail. McCann had an answer for them.
“It’s a lot of s—,” she said.
Deputies found the car and items fell out when they opened the door to the back seat, as body camera footage shows. The merchandise was not the only thing they found. They also allegedly found glass pipes, marijuana, methamphetamine and other drugs. In the trunk, there was a safe containing various 1-ounce silver bars and rounds, copper bars, and a 1-gram platinum bar, according to deputies.
After deputies placed McCann in the cruiser, dashcam video showed she had yet more to say.
“Who gives a f— anyway, it’s just material s—,” she yelled out of the window.
She was arrested for grand theft between $750 and $5,000 along with various drug-related charges and taken to jail on a $34,000 bond. She remains at the jail as of Monday morning.
“If she really thought she was playing a shoplifting game, she lost to our deputies and observant citizens,” Sheriff Rick Staly in a statement. “She may have skipped the checkout lane at Walmart, but she went through the express check-in at the Green Roof Inn with a free set of designer bracelets — aka handcuffs.”
