JACKSON COUNTY, Mo. (TCN) — A 21-year-old woman faces charges in connection with the fatal shooting of a teenage girl who was at a sleepover.
According to a probable cause statement, on Aug. 9, Kansas City Police responded to a home to a report of a possible shooting. At the scene, they found a juvenile, identified by KSHB-TV as 16-year-old Traelynn Sibley, in the bathroom suffering from a gunshot wound to her throat. She was transported to a hospital, where she was pronounced deceased.
The victim and another female were reportedly fixing each other’s hair at a vanity while two men were playing video games in the living room. Authorities noted that a toddler was also in the residence. The witnesses allegedly heard gunshots and noticed bullets entering the home through the front door and living room wall area. Sibley was reportedly struck while doing her friend’s hair, and she ran to the bathroom and collapsed.
All the witnesses in the home purportedly couldn’t describe the suspect and didn’t see any shooters. According to the probable cause statement, the witnesses also didn’t “know who would have motive to harm them.”
Detectives recovered numerous shell casings on the street in front of the house and observed bullet holes in the home and a car in the driveway. Through video surveillance, investigators reportedly identified Bailey Lewis as a person of interest. Someone in the house had allegedly previously been associated with Lewis but broke off the association because they did not like the way Lewis was acting.
The person who knew Lewis allegedly told authorities that they had a falling out after Bailey let her get “jumped” at a gas station months before the shooting.
According to the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office, Lewis faces charges of second-degree felony murder, three counts of accessory armed criminal actions, and two counts of accessory unlawful use of a weapon. She is being held on $400,000 bond.Â
