UNION CITY, Calif (TCN) —Â Police announced the arrest of a 46-year-old woman in connection with the death of a newborn girl found in a dumpster nearly 16 years ago.
According to the Union City Police Department, on May 18, 2009, a man looking for recyclables near the Parkside Apartments discovered the deceased baby, named by officers as Matea Esperanza, meaning “Gift from God” in Hebrew and “Hope” in Spanish. Authorities launched an investigation that “remained open and active for more than a decade.”
Detectives developed leads through advanced DNA testing of evidence recovered in 2009. Through further analysis, police were able to compare DNA and identify Angela Onduto of Denver, Colorado, as the primary suspect. She had already been identified as a person of interest early in the investigation.
Detectives traveled to Denver in May, and with help from local authorities, they arrested Onduto. However, charges were pending further testing and findings from the medical examiner.
According to police, the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office has now filed a charge of murder against Onduto. Denver Police took her into custody on July 2, and she will be extradited to Alameda County.
Police said, “Matea’s memory continues to resonate within Union City. In 2017, the Union City Police Officers Association purchased a permanent grave marker in her honor, and a memorial service is held annually by members of the department.”
